30 May 2025

To celebrate the achievements of our GLA-funded project, Food Roots 2, we brought together individuals from statutory services, food initiatives across London, ward councillors, and those passionate about food resilience, including members of the next generation, for our 'Stretching the Pound' event at the beautiful Wolves Lane Centre. There was a fantastic turnout for the event, with over 50 attendees joining us to explore how to build a food-resilient Haringey.

We were honoured to be joined by the newly appointed Deputy Mayor, Michelle Simmons Safo, who treated the audience to a powerful spoken word piece about her own story of growing up in food poverty.

Our keynote speaker, Nina from Sufra, spoke about how their wellbeing project, which offers wraparound support, has helped change lives in Brent, preparing the ground perfectly for a thought-provoking panel discussion.

Damien from The Felix Project called for food to be prioritised at a strategic level, urging sustainable funding for vital frontline services and coordinated support.

Anne from Cinnamon Leaf highlighted the barriers local businesses face when trying to work with local suppliers and how they minimise food waste.

Pam from Black Rootz stressed the need for more paid roles in food growing and the healing power it has.

Janine from Tottenham Food Bank shared how the Information, Advice, and Guidance (IAG) approach, led by Alice, has helped support families beyond immediate crisis.

The discussion underscored the urgent need for joined-up thinking between community organisations, local government, and business to build a fairer, more resilient food system.

The panel was followed by a workshop that centred around blue-sky thinking of practical ways to build a food-resilient Haringey, sparking much discussion and generating many collaborative ideas.

The day ended with a delicious, climate-friendly feast cooked for us by local chef Rosamund Grant.

If you're interested in hearing more and exploring practical actions together, join us for our Community of Practice at Chestnuts Community Centre on Tuesday, 24 June, 5 pm.
