Communicate Emergency Information

Back to guide menu

If you want to help your community by sharing accurate and timely information during an emergency, these are some of the things you can start thinking about to be able to do this effectively:

  • Do you know where to find official information?
  • What are the best ways to reach residents in your community?
  • Which languages would you need to provide information in?
  • How will you communicate if there is no power or if phone lines are down?
  • Which networks should you become a member to contribute to a coordinated approach and share consistent messages?
  • Do you have staff or volunteers with the skills to run an information hub?

What to consider when sharing a message

Expand

During emergencies, you may receive information from different government departments, emergency services, and community partners. You can help residents to better navigate the wealth of resources available by organising information and directing them to the most up-to-date and relevant source.

Important to note that misinformation can be easily spread. This can happen for many reasons, including information becoming quickly outdated, or unconfirmed messages passing by word-of mouth. If you want to help by spreading helpful messages to your community, always share up-to-date information from official sources, such as the channels suggested here

How to communicate with other colleagues supporting the community

Expand

Joining local networks can be useful for mutual help and sharing information. Haringey has a long list of networks and forums that you can join.

Online communities such as NavNet can be helpful in an emergency. NavNet is a community made up of people who work in Haringey and whose combined knowledge is channelled to support each other to help Haringey residents. NavNet exists as an online support portal (WhatsApp) and via regular in-person networking support events. For more information, please email [email protected]
